This trick can be used to enable Universe, Restricted or Multiverse repositories to let you access all their content from the software center or synaptic, thousands free and tested applications by the Ubuntu community.
Ubuntu 11.10 and later
- Click on the configuration menu in the top right corner and then click on System Settings...
- Type your administrator password and press the Enter key.
- Click on Software Sources.
- In the Ubuntu Software tab, check the Universe repository (and other repositories if that's what you want) and click on Close.
Ubuntu 11.04
- Click on the Ubuntu menu in the top left corner.
- Type the word synaptic and click on Synaptic Package Manager.
- Type your administrator password and press the Enter key.
- Click on the Settings / Repositories menu.
- In the Ubuntu Software tab, check the Universe repository (and other repositories if that's what you want) and click on Close.
- Click on Reload so Ubuntu gets the content list of the new repositories.
Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.10
- Click on the System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager menu in the top left corner.
- Type your administrator password and press the Enter key.
- Click on the Settings / Repositories menu.
- In the Ubuntu Software tab, check the Universe repository (and other repositories if that's what you want) and click on Close.
- Click on Reload so Ubuntu gets the content list of the new repositories.
