Reset Mac OS X password with the installation disk

Provided that you kept the installation disk that came with your iMac or MacBook, you can easily reset a password. Otherwise, you can reset the password with the single user mode.

  1. Press the button to boot your computer and immediately press the C letter key until the Mac OS X installation disk starts.
  2. Click on Use English for the main language and click on the arrow in the bottom right corner. 
  3. In the top menus, click on Utilities / Reset Password...
  4. Click on your hard drive, chose your username and then type your new password twice and click Save.
  5. In the top menus, click on Reset Password / Quit Reset Password.
  6. In the top menus, click on Mac OS X Installer / Quit Mac OS X Installer...
  7. Click on Restart to restart your computer.
